Suhakam: Dec 8 date for Human Rights Day celebration was decided in October - Nation

PETALING JAYA: The decision to hold the Human Rights Day celebration on Saturday (Dec 8) at Padang Timur here was decided back in October, says Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) chairman Tan Sri Razali Ismail (pic).

He said date for the celebration was decided on Oct 18 in accordance with a date provided by the Prime Minister’s Office.

Razali said it was not a counter-rally to the anti-Icerd (International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination) gathering organised by PAS and Umno in Kuala Lumpur at Dataran Merdeka on the same day.

The Suhakam chairman said such allegations were “gutter politics” and intended to tarnish its reputation.

Razali also hit out at the nature of reporting on the Human Rights Day celebration by the media, but added that Suhakam wholeheartedly supports the principle of the right to peaceful assembly.

Razali had said the event that is open to the public is being held to mark Human Rights Day, universally celebrated on Dec 10.

The anti-Icerd rally will begin at 2pm and end at 6pm that day. Suhakam’s Human Rights Day gathering is expected to begin at 9am and end at 3pm.
