PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (pic) wants to know if Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is paving the way for future racial policies after the prime minister made comments justifying affirmative action policies recently.
Dr Mahathir had, during a forum in London on Monday (Oct 1), claimed that affirmative action in Malaysia was justified because most Chinese in the country was rich.
“With Dr Mahathir highlighting the ‘wealthy Chinese’ label again, one cannot help but wonder if he is paving the way for future racial policies,” Wee, who is MCA deputy president, said on his Facebook post on Tuesday (Oct 2).
He added it is important to note that the wealth gap is not simply a racial issue, as each race has members on extreme ends of income distribution.
“There are bound to be affluent ones and underprivileged ones,” he said.
Dr Wee also questioned DAP on the party’s stance on Dr Mahathir’s remarks.
“Please don’t dodge the question, but clarify where you stand on this issue,” he said.
Dr Mahathir during a forum titled The Future of Democracy in Asia which was streamed live by Chatham House, the Royal Institute of International Affairs in London on Monday had said that the Chinese in Malaysia were the richest people in the country while the indigenous people were mostly poor.
He added that if the wealth disparity between the Chinese and the indigenous people was not brought to parity or the gap reduced, then it would be inviting instability into the country.
