Dr M: Pakatan leaders have left the past behind, the future now is for the country - Nation

PORT DICKSON: Pakatan Harapan leaders have reaffirmed their vow to put aside any past differences and work together for the future of the nation.

Pakatan chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the coalition could no longer be mired in past grudges and incidences as it will hinder them from working together.

“On the other hand, the bigger mission is greater than ours or the parties’ interests.

“Our mission then (before assuming federal power) was to topple a kleptocratic government.

“Although Barisan Nasional was seen as giant, when Pakatan parties prepared to cooperate and set aside their differences, that unity brought about success,” he said at a mega ceramah in Port Dickson on Monday (Oct 8).

This is the first time that Dr Mahathir and Port Dickson by-election candidate Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim have shared a stage after some 20 years of rivalry.

“Me and Anwar were not in good terms, but don’t forget that he joined Umno and became a minister because of me.

“If we want to think about the past, we would not work together,” added Dr Mahathir.

He quipped that even Defence Minster Mohamad Sabu and Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng were once jailed under the now-repealed Internal Security Act 1960, and were willing put the past behind.

Dr Mahathir, asked voters to support Anwar as the Port Dickson candidate and Pakatan in general, and said that their backing is vital to bring the nation forward.

“I hope this by-election (win) will be given to Pakatan and Anwar. I hope we can work together.

“Not for Anwar, not for Dr Mahathir, or Mat Sabu or Guan Eng, but to work together for our beloved country, and for the Malaysians who entrusted us with this opportunity to rebuild the nation,” he said.

Dr Mahathir also said he was very happy to campaign for Anwar in his bid to return to Parliament.
