Anwar happy that Dr M will campaign for him in PD - Nation

PORT DICKSON (Bernama): Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says he is happy that Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will be in Port Dickson to campaign for him in the by-election here.

Anwar, the Pakatan Harapan candidate, said that Dr Mahathir’s gesture is a good sign for himself as well as the residents of Port Dickson.

“This is because Tun Dr Mahathir, when he was prime minister in the previous term did not campaign in by-elections.

“The task was usually handed over to his deputy and other leaders,” said the PKR president-elect when speaking at a gathering of village entrepreneurs and friends of Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia here on Friday (Oct 5).

He said Dr Mahathir’s presence will give confidence to Port Dickson voters to support the Pakatan candidate and hoped top national leaders would also assist in assuring the people.

It was reported that Dr Mahathir would be campaigning for Anwar in Port Dickson on Oct 8.

Dr Mahathir, who is also Pakatan chairman, had said his decision to campaign for Anwar would dismiss anyu allegations that their relations were strained.

Meanwhile, Anwar in his speech said he appreciated the warm reception from the local community to his campaign and was very encouraged by the support shown.

“I would like to make Port Dickson my home village and have with friends from the various races as it is my style not to be too formal,” he said.

Anwar’s by-election campaign has covered almost all areas here and is not easing his pace.

PKR communications director Ahmad Fahmi Mohamed Fadzil said the campaign, which was now at the mid-way point, was proceeding smoothly without any untoward incidents.

“We are gathering momentum and will try to hold as many programmes as possible to reach out to all levels of voters in Port Dickson,” he told a media conference at Pakatan operations room here.

Also contesting in the by-election are independent candidates former Negri Sembilan mentri besar Tan Sri Mohd Isa Abdul Samad, Anwar’s former personal assistant Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, social media personality Stevie Chan Kee Leong, management consultant Kan Chee Yuen, former lecturer Lau Seck Yan, and PAS’ Lt Col (R) Mohd Nazari Mokhtar.

The Port Dickson parliamentary by-election was held after its incumbent Datuk Danyal Balagopal Abdullah, 68, vacated the seat on Sept 12 to give allow to Anwar to make a return to Parlaiment.

The Election Commission has set polling day on Oct 13 while early voting is on Oct 9. – Bernama
