PETALING JAYA: The decision by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to not attend the International Human Rights Day celebration is not right, says activist Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan.
“This is not right”, said Ambiga in a tweet on Saturday (Dec 8).
Dr Mahathir has said that he will not be attending the event organised by the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) in Petaling Jaya on Sunday (Dec 9).
He explained that this was because the government had already decided against ratifying the International Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (Icerd), which was contrary to Suhakam’s stand on the issue.
Dr Mahathir was originally supposed to attend the Suhakam event on Saturday (Dec 7), as the guest of honour.
In another tweet, Ambiga also said that the anti-Icerd rally puts into practice the freedom of assembly.
“Today’s rally is putting into practice a most important and fundamental human right … freedom of assembly. Only in Malaysia Baharu,” said Ambiga.
